The Paramedicine Board of Australia (the Board) is today acknowledging the hard work and dedication of paramedics on International Paramedics Day.
Today celebrates the important work of paramedics and first responders around the world, including their positive impact on communities.
Board Chair and paramedic, Professor Stephen Gough, said, ‘International Paramedics Day is a wonderful opportunity to think about the exceptional work done by paramedics every day.’
‘As frontline healthcare providers, paramedics show supreme levels of commitment to their work and their patients, despite often very difficult circumstances.’
While reflecting on the important role of paramedics in our communities, Professor Gough also acknowledged the potential impact that paramedic practise can have on the paramedics themselves.
‘International paramedics day is also an opportunity for paramedics remember the importance of looking after themselves and their colleagues within the profession. Paramedics turn up to each shift not knowing what challenges they may face that day. It’s essential that while looking after their communities, they also take time to ensure they check in regularly on their own health and wellbeing.’
Some paramedics may have access to employee assistance programs, others might need to seek support from a healthcare professional or one of the many community resources such as Beyond Blue, the Black Dog Institute or Lifeline. It is important that paramedics reach out to someone if they need to or where there is a need, help guide colleagues to support services.
